These two newspaper articles, as it happened, focused the eyes of the world on Kwangju. Up to this time the South Korean military had pretty much kept a lid on the story.

Years later, what is there to add? There is always stuff that a reporter cannot write, notably to do with himself or herself—how the work has been done. Two points come to mind in this instance:

Jae and Phillippe arrived in Kwangju on the key day, May 21, the day the civilian militia finally succeeded in forcing the Korean army (one of the toughest in the world) to pull back from the city. Our excellent timing was thanks to Jae. On the evening of May 20 Jae had concluded that all hell was about to break loose. We had quickly agreed that he should get a car and driver and drive to Kwangju, 385 kilometers to the south, the next day.

The other point missing from our news stories was the fact that my friends (this was the case with all foreign correspondents) had been treated like heroes ("triumphant generals," Jae said) by the populace. Jae and Phillippe, trapped in their hired car, found themselves caught up in tumultuous crowds and swept forward, in effect as supporters of the uprising, with demonstrators chanting "New York Times! New York Times!"
